Softball Honors Seniors Prebble and Oh, Split with No. 13 Wildcats

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina softball team won its suspended game against No. 13 Kentucky Saturday afternoon (May 7) 6-4, before falling in game two of the series 11-1. Prior to the second game, the Gamecocks recognize their two seniors, Katie Prebble and Kelsey Oh. 
 
Game 1
During the first five innings on Friday night, UK jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first. 
 
The Gamecocks would bat around in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs. With runners on the corners, Zoe Laneaux singled to left, scoring Prebble. A throwing error on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Marissa Gonzalez, brought home another run. Jordan Fabian followed with an RBI single up the middle and Hannah Kumiyama scored two more on a single through the left side.
 
Kumiyama added to the lead in the bottom of the sixth, connecting on her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center. Kentucky added two runs in the top of the seventh on a home run.
 
Leah Powell earned her seventh win of the season, throwing a complete game. She allowed six hits while striking out three.
 
Game 2
The Gamecocks fell behind early again, but this time, they were unable to recover. The Wildcats scored two in the second, four in the third and another in the fourth.
 
Carolina got on the scoreboard when it loaded the bases in the fourth. Riley Blampied, Prebble, and Laneaux drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Carlie Henderson’s groundout to the third baseman, allowed Blampied to score.
 
Kentucky would add two in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
 
Powell took the loss in 2 1-3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits, and striking out two.
 
The regular season finale between the Gamecocks and Wildcats will be tomorrow, May 8, at noon. Fans can purchase the Mother’s Day Special online for $20 in advance, and receive two tickets, two hot dogs, and two sodas. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
