Gamecocks Out-Hit Aggies, But Fall in SEC Tournament
Jordan Fabian and Maddie Gallagher each had three hits
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The South Carolina softball season came to a close Tuesday night (May 10), as the Gamecocks fell to Texas A&M 5-3 in the opening round of the SEC Tournament.
Carolina out-hit the Aggies on the night 9-4, but stranded 11 runners. Jordan Fabian and Maddie Gallagher each finished with three hits. Fabian went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, while Gallagher was 3-for-4.
“I’m really proud of our team and the effort they had tonight,” head coach Beverly Smith said. “I thought we put up a good, hard fight, we put up a lot of hits and left 11 on base tonight, it was an exciting ball game. We were just missing that timely hit to score, but I’m certainly proud of this group and the fight they showed in this game.”
Texas A&M took an early lead they would not relinquish, scoring three runs in the third, another in the fourth and one more in the fifth.
The Gamecocks scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning, as they batted around. Fabian led off the inning with a double and Hannah Kumiyama followed with a single. A groundout by Riley Blampied scored Fabian from third. Katie Prebble delivered an RBI double to left-center, scoring Giulia Desiderio, who had run for Kumiyama. Gallagher pushed across the final run with an RBI single to right.
Starting pitcher Leah Powell took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on two hits in 3 1-3 innings.
