Pair of Gamecocks Headed for Singles Finals Sunday

GREENVILLE, S.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis went 6-6 across singles and doubles action on the second day of the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic, including a pair of comeback singles wins.

Sophomore Sarah Hamner is headed to the Flight 1 final Sunday after her comeback win over Vanderbilt’s Celia Belle Mohr. The No. 2 player in the country dropped the opening set 2-6 before rallying back to take the second 6-4. The two launched a back-and-forth battle in the decisive third with Hamner delivering a late service break to take the 7-5 victory. In Sunday’s title match, she will face No. 12 Elizabeth Scotty of North Carolina at 9 a.m.

In Flight 7 action, senior Ana Cruz turned in a solid 6-3, 6-4 win over Vanderbilt’s Amy Stevens to earn a spot in that final match. She will take on Furman’s Sara Snyder at 11 a.m.

The Gamecocks’ other three singles wins came in consolation action with Elise Mills posting a huge comeback against Alexandra Mikhailuk of Mississippi State 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 in Flight 3. Misa Malkin and Chloe Narboni added straight-set wins in Flights 7 and 8, respectively.

In doubles, the Gamecocks’ top team of Hamner and Ayana Akli, ranked No. 60 in the nation, turned in the lone win with an efficient 8-3 win over Ohio State’s Shelly Bereznyak and Kathleen Jones in Flight 1 consolation action. Mills and Cruz dropped the Flight 2 final to North Carolina’s Abbey Forbes and Fiona Crawley.
