Perez Scores First Career Goal but Gamecocks Fall to No. 6 Marshall

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s soccer team dropped its Sun Belt Conference match to 6th ranked Marshall 3-1 Saturday night (Oct. 8). The Gamecocks are now 5-4-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in the Sun Belt.

Marshall held a 7-4 shot advantage and led 4-2 in shots on goal.

The Thundering Herd opened the scoring with less than 10 minutes to play in the first half, scoring after the ball deflected off a Gamecock defender to a Marshall player at the top of the 18-yard box. The Herd added goals in the 69th and 79th minutes.

Harrison Myring nearly tied the match in the 53rd minute when he beat a defender to put a shot just inside the near post that the Marshall keeper had to make a diving save on.

Rocky Perez scored his first collegiate goal in the 88th minute. Perez stole to ball deep in the Marshall zone. He made darted around multiple defenders before striking the ball from just outside the 18-yard box into the lower left 90.

South Carolina returns to action at Costal Carolina on Friday, October 14 at 7 p.m.
