Gamecocks Split Doubleheader with No. 14 Tigers
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina softball team split a doubleheader with No. 14 LSU (22-2) Monday (Mar. 13) to wrap up opening weekend of SEC Play. The Gamecocks won the first game 4-2, before falling in the rubber game 5-1. Carolina now stands at 22-4 on the season.
Marissa Gonzalez led the Gamecocks on the day going 3-for-6 with two RBIs. Aniyah Black, Brooke Blankenship, and Zoe Laneaux each had two hits on the day. Laneaux also drove in two runs.
GAME 1
LSU opened the scoring with a run in the second, but the Gamecocks clawed their way back, scoring all four of their runs in the fourth.
Jen Cummings was hit by a pitch for the 13th time this season. One out later, Black singled and then Laneaux doubled to score both runners.

With a full count to the next batter Gonzalez, she crushed a pitch off the light pole in left-center for her second home run of the season.

The Tigers added a run in the sixth, but that would be all the runs Carolina would need. Donnie Gobourne improve to 5-0 on the season throwing five innings of relief, allowing one run on four hits and struck out 10 batters. Bailey Betenbaugh started in the circle, allowing one run on two hits in two innings of work.

Game 2
The scoring starting again in the second, as LSU scored first. The Gamecocks responded in the bottom half of the inning as Gonzalez doubled to lead off the frame. After going to third on a wild pitch, she stole home when the Tiger catcher threw behind her.

LSU added to the lead with a run in the third before scoring three in the seventh with two outs.
South Carolina used all six of its pitchers in the game. Karsen Ochs dropped to 5-2 with the loss as she allowed a run on three hits in an inning of work. The staff combined to strike out seven Tigers.
The Gamecocks continue their homestand with a mid-week game on March 15 against in-state foe Presbyterian at 6 p.m.
