Gamecocks Yield Opening-Day Success at Tom Jones Memorial

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (April 14, 2023) – The Gamecocks concluded the first day of the Tom Jones Memorial, competing in 11 events on the first day.

The men’s squad took part in seven events with Dylan Targgart highlighting the individual performances. The veteran thrower set another personal best in the shot put, tossing 19.89m (65-3.25). Targgart passed Gamecock great Eric Favors for the third longest throw in South Carolina history, while also ranking third in the East Region.

Kobe Franklin and Anthony Greenhow, Jr. also posted strong individual performances. Franklin jumped a personal best 2.09m (6-10.25) in the high jump, finishing seventh overall and ranking 25th in the East. Greenhow posted a new collegiate-best performance in the men’s 200m with a time of 20.75 (0.8) to finish 15th and rank 21st in the East.

The women’s team participated in four events, posting the best results in the 5,000 meter to cap off the night. Gabriella Gait-Smith finished with silver medalist honors following a personal-best time of 17:17.16. Lily Weeks was fourth overall with a new personal best when she stopped the clock at 17:50.63. Hayden Withers rounded out the 5K competitors with a sixth-place finish after a time of 18:03.35.

Jayla Jamison stole the show in the 200 meter for the Gamecocks, finishing 11th overall with a new collegiate-best time of 22.79 (0.7). Jamison’s new collegiate PR ranks fifth all time in outdoor Gamecock history, while sitting 10th in the East Region.

Alex Costantino turned in the 10th fastest outdoor 1500m in Gamecock history when she stopped the clock at 4:31.24.

The Gamecocks will close out the Tom Jones Memorial with 18 events tomorrow, beginning at 11 a.m. Carolina will then return home to host its final meet of the outdoor season on Saturday, April 22.
