Carolina Wraps up Tom Jones Memorial on Saturday

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (April 15, 2023) – South Carolina concluded the 2023 Tom Jones Memorial on Saturday afternoon, competing in 16 total events for the final day.

The Gamecock women competed in nine events in Gainesville, finishing Top-10 in five of the nine. One of the highlights on the day was Sylvia Chelangat running the fastest 800-meter time in Gamecock history, clocking 2:02.58 to finish fourth overall and rank fourth in the East Region. Teammate Kieley Gayle posted the ninth fastest 800-meter run in program history when she posted a new personal best time of 2:08.57.

KD Young brought home a pair of Top-10 finishes, including bronze in the women’s shot put after throwing 15.83m (51-11.25). She also placed ninth in the hammer throw, tossing 59.70m (195-10) to sit 24th in the East.

Ella Zeigler was the final individual that posted a Top-10 finish, recording a time of 10:37.46 in the women’s 3K to sit seventh overall. The women’s 4×400 meter relay squad of Angel Frank, Sylvia Chelangat, Aalliyah Francis and Jahnile Registre turned a season-best time of 3:32.61 to finish ninth in the event. Frank and Registre also accomplished individual feats as Frank improved on her Philippine national record in the 400m with a new time of 53.34, while Registre set a new personal best in the 400m (52.91) to rank 13th in the East Region.

The men’s team was highlighted by a silver medal finish in the men’s 400m by Evan Miller, running 45.14 to improve on his third-place mark in program history. In addition, Miller now ranks second in the East Region.

Veteran distance runner Jack Mensch moved into ninth all-time in Gamecock history in the men’s 800m after clocking 1:49.57, finishing 16th in the event and moving up to 27th in the East.

Carolina returns to the Sheila and Morris Cregger Track for one final home meet during the 2023 outdoor season. The Gamecocks will play host to the USC Open on Saturday, April 22 and will also honor the seniors on both the cross country and track & field teams.
