Gamecocks Drop Game Two to No. 12 Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – The South Carolina softball team (32-14, 7-10) dropped game two of its SEC series against 12th ranked Georgia (36-10, 14-5), 9-1 in five innings Saturday afternoon (Apr. 22).

The game served as the SEC’s All For Alex game, as each team wore teal to bring awareness for ovarian cancer, in honor of former Mississippi State player Alex Wilcox who passed away in 2018.

The Gamecocks jumped out to the early lead, scoring in the top of the first. With one out, Zoe Laneaux reached on an error by the Georgia pitcher. After stealing second, Laneaux scored when the ground ball off the bat of Riley Blampied was thrown wide by the third baseman.

South Carolina was unable to hold on to the lead as the Bulldogs scored twice in the second on a three-base error followed by a sacrifice fly, and a solo home run. They would score five runs in the third before ending the game in the fifth on a two-run home run.

Bailey Betenbaugh took the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits in 2 2-3 innings.

The series wraps up tomorrow (Apr 23) at noon.
