Epley Inks Grad Transfer Shahar Biran for 2023-24 Season
Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis head coach Kevin Epley has announced the signing of Shahar Biran, a graduate transfer from Old Dominion University.
Biran, a native of Hod HaSharon, Israel, will join the Gamecocks after completing her undergraduate degree in business economics from ODU. Biran played for four seasons with the Monarchs and had a standout senior season where she complied a 14-2 singles record with a perfect 7-0 mark against conference opponents. She ended the dual season on a ten-match win streak with all ten wins coming in straight sets. Biran also had a successful doubles campaign in 2023, racking up an 11-8 record.
During the 2022 season, Biran went 14-6 overall with a dual record of 8-1 in singles including a 2-0 mark at the No. 5 position and a 6-1 mark at the No. 6 position. She concluded the season on a seven match win streak. In doubles, she won ten matches on the season with a 7-5 record at the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
In 2021, Biran went 4-4 in singles and was named to the Conference USA Honor Roll.
During her freshman campaign, Biran was named to the All-Conference USA Second team in singles and doubles after going a perfect 7-0 in singles and 7-3 in doubles. As a freshman she also reached the semifinals in doubles at the ITA Atlantic Regionals.
Professionally, Biran has reached the semifinals of the ITF Pro Circuit 15k singles tournament in Kiryat Shmona (June 2018), Stellenbosch (November 2018), and Netanya (June 2019). In doubles she has made the finals of the 15k Tel Aviv (June 2018), and made the semifinals in Kiryat Shmona (June 2018), Cubeo (August 2018), Herzlia (October 2018), Stellenbosch (November 2018), Heraklion (May 2019), and Netanya (June 2019).
Biran ranked as high as No. 252 in the ITF Singles Rankings (April 2019) and No. 806 in the WTA Singles Rankings (August 2019). In doubles, she has a career-high of No. 793 in the WTA Doubles Rankings (August 2019). Biran was also a finalist in the Masters Kahn National Tournament (2018) and represented her home country on the Israeli Fed Cup Team in 2018.
