Baseball's McGillis Signs Free-Agent Deal with Angels
LOS ANGELES – University of South Carolina infielder Will McGillis has signed a free-agent deal with the Los Angeles Angels, it was announced this morning (Wednesday, July 12).
McGillis played the 2023 season with the Gamecocks after transferring from Southern Miss. He played in 31 games with 29 starts and hit .313 with 29 runs scored, four doubles, 14 home runs and 30 RBI. He hit a pair of home runs on Opening Day in a win over UMass Lowell (Feb. 17), then broke a five-all tie with a home run in a win over Penn (Feb. 26). McGillis scored four runs and led off the game with a home run in a win over Georgia (March 19). He missed 24 games due to injury, but came back and was named to the All-NCAA Columbia Regional team after having five hits and driving in five in the three wins. McGillis then hit two home runs in game one of the Gainesville Super Regional game against Florida (June 9).
Carolina had six players picked in the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft the past two days. McGillis is the second position player to be either drafted or signed from the 2023 team, joining double-play partner Braylen Wimmer, who was drafted in the eighth round by the Colorado Rockies.
