Da Silva Perfect in Singles at Season Opening Tournament

Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis completed their season opening tournament on Sunday, highlighted by junior Lucas da Silva who wrapped the tournament with a perfect 4-0 singles record.

The Sao Paulo, Brazil, native entered the tournament un the C-draw where he tallied a pair of straight set wins on the first day, earning him a spot in the A-draw after another player withdrew. In the A-draw da Silva again was relentless claiming two more straight set wins. Across all four of da Silva’s match, the sophomore only allowed his opponents an average of 2.75 games per set.

Da Silva’s win was South Carolina’s only victory of the day with No. 59 Casey Hoole falling in three sets to No. 37 Ronald Hohmann, freshman Jelani Sarr falling in three to No. 33 Tyler Stice, and Carter Morgan dropping his match to No. 65 Alejandro Moreno. Freshman Sean Daryabeigi did not see action on the day after his opponent withdrew from the competition prior to the start of the match.

The Gamecocks also gained experience in doubles on the final day of action with both of the team’s pairing dropping their matches.

The men’s tennis team will be in action next at the ITA All-American Championships that will run September 30-October 8 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
