Gamecocks Close Out Regular Season with Sixth-Place Finish in Spartanburg

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Oct. 14, 2023) – South Carolina Cross Country concluded the 2023 regular season on Saturday with a sixth-place finish at the Upstate Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C. The Gamecocks bested 26 other teams, including Virginia Tech, Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State.

Veteran distance runner Lily Weeks led the charge for the Gamecocks, finishing 28th overall with a time of 18:00.3. Weeks was followed by Sofie Kurzawa and Hope Dominique, finishing 34th and 35th, respectively. Kurzawa, a freshman runner from Greenville, clocked 18:17 flat. Meanwhile, Dominique turned in a time of 18:21.7.

Anna Boyd was the fourth fastest runner for the Gamecocks, finishing 38th on the leaderboard after running a time of 18:23.7. Freshman distance runner and South Carolina native, Anya Arroyo, rounded out the top five runners for Carolina when she clocked 18:34.4 to finish 46th overall.

Furman claimed the team title with 66 points, followed by Charleston Southern (139) and Radford rounding out the top three with 149 points.

The Gamecocks will now turn their attention to the 2023 SEC Cross Country Championship on Friday, Oct. 27. South Carolina will be playing as the host of the championship meet, running at Charwood Golf Club. The men’s 8K race will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the women’s 6K event at approximately 10:45 a.m.
