Buchwald Inks for 2024-25
Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis head coach Kevin Epley has announced the signing of Helena Buchwald to the team for the 2024-25 season. Buchwald, a native of Berlin, Germany, will join the Gamecocks in fall 2024 with four years of eligibility.
“We are very excited to have Helena join the Gamecocks,” said Epley. “She is a driven athlete and while a strong player already, she will improve a lot in college. She is a natural fit for our program and we look forward to having her on campus.”
“During the entire recruiting process, it was very clear that she would be a great fit for our program,” said assistant coach Axel Damiens. “She is very talented and a great competitor. She brings a lot of international experience as well being one of the top juniors in Germany. We are excited to have her join our team.”
Buchwald currently sits at No. 1,161 in the WTA singles rankings and has a career high of No. 949 that she achieved in August of this year. The best ranking scalp of her career came over No. 463 in a straight set 6-0, 6-1 takedown.
Buchwald is Germany’s U18 runner-up in singles and the national champion in doubles. She currently is ranked No. 5 in Germany’s U18 rankings and has a singles UTR of 10.18.
“I’m really happy and excited to come to the University of South Carolina and join the Gamecocks,” Buchwald said. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the people because that was one of the most important parts of my decision. During my visit I felt comfortable and immediately liked everyone. I was also very impressed by the professionalism and the beauty of the facility.”
