SEC Announces 2023 Fall Academic Honor Roll

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A total of 1,264 student-athletes were named to the 2023 Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll, announced Thursday, Feb. 1 by SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. The 2023 Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll includes the sports of cross country, football, soccer and volleyball, and is based on grades from the 2023 spring, summer and fall terms.

South Carolina had 115 student-athletes make the list, third-most in the conference. The total is the third-highest in department history, behind only fall of 2019 (118) and 2021 (120).

Gamecock student-athletes ended the fall semester with a departmental grade point average (GPA) of 3.374, the department’s fourth-highest GPA on record and the 34th-consecutive semester with a departmental GPA above 3.0. Women’s golf (3.90) earned the highest team GPA, followed closely by beach volleyball (3.73) and women’s soccer (3.70). Overall, 16 of 18 teams earned a GPA of 3.0 or better during the fall semester. The department named 85 student-athletes to the President’s List for earning a 4.0 GPA, 177 student-athletes to the Dean’s List (3.5) and 411 to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (3.0).

“Our student-athletes continue to demonstrate the ability to successfully balance their academic and athletic pursuits,” Athletics Director Ray Tanner said when the fall GPA was announced on Jan. 10. “The pursuit of excellence for our student-athletes in the classroom and on the playing fields and courts build the foundation for their future success.”

Any student-athlete who participates in a Southeastern Conference championship sport or a student-athlete who participates in a sport listed on his/her institution’s NCAA Sports Sponsorship Form is eligible for nomination to the Academic Honor Roll. The following criteria will be followed: (1) A student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution. (2) If a student-athlete attends summer school, his/her grade point average during the summer academic term must be included in the calculation used to determine eligibility for the Academic Honor Roll. (3) Student-athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletics scholarship, recipients of an athletics award (i.e., letter winner), and non- scholarship student-athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons. (4) Prior to being nominated, a student-athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non-remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution. (5) The student-athlete must have been a member of a varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.
