No. 22 Gamecocks Win Rain-Shortened Game Over College of Charleston

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 22 ranked South Carolina softball team (14-2) earned a 4-0 win Wednesday night (Feb. 28) over in-state foe the College of Charleston (4-10) in a game that was called in the top of the sixth due to weather.

All four runs were driven in by a different player for the Gamecocks. Reganne Bennett earned the win to improve to 4-0 on the season, as she allowed two hits and struck out four in three innings of work. Sage Mardjetko earned her third save of the season, throwing 2 1-3 innings and striking out five Cougars.

South Carolina pushed across two runs in the bottom of the second after loading the bases. A pair of walks to Aniyah Black and Denver Bryant led to a single by Marissa Gonzalez to juice the bases. A walk to Karley Shelton brough home Giulia Desiderio who had run for Black. Brooke Blankenship followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Bryant from third.

Just before the rain came, Carolina added to its lead in the fifth. Riley Blampied singled, Kianna Jones reached on an error, and Jen Cummings was hit by a pitch to again load the bases. Black singled through the left side to bring home Blampied. Cummings later scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Bennett, beating the tag at the plate.

After a strikeout and a walk in the top of the sixth, the skies opened, and the downpour of rain and lightning came, resulting in the game being called.

The Gamecocks return to action this weekend (March 1-3) for the Knights Classic hosted by UCF.
