No. 22 Gamecocks Unable to Complete 7th Inning Comeback

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A seventh inning coming back came up just short for the 22nd ranked South Carolina softball team (18-5, 0-3), as the Gamecocks fell to No. 17 Texas A&M (23-2, 3-0) 2-1 Saturday afternoon (March 10).

The lone Aggie runs came in the third inning after an infield single and a walk were followed by a triple.

The Gamecocks broke up the would-be no-hitter in the seventh when Kianna Jones led off the inning with a triple. A walk to Aniyah Black led to a single to left by Karley Shelton, scoring Jones. After a sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third, Carolina was unable to bring home the tying run.

Jori Heard (4-1) suffered the loss, allowing one run on one hit while striking out three in 2 1-3 innings. Sage Mardjetko came on for the final 3 2-3, allowing one run on two hits and striking out four.

South Carolina returns home to host the Garnet & Black Challenge March 14-17. They will open with Boston U Thursday at 5 p.m.
