Baseball Earns 4-3 Win over Georgia State in North Augusta

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C.  – The University of South Carolina baseball team scored a run in the fifth and two in the sixth, making those count in a 4-3 win over Georgia State on Tuesday night (March 12) at SRP Park, home of the Augusta Greenjackets.

The Gamecocks scored first in the first as Dylan Brewer singled, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on Ethan Petry’s single to left. Georgia State then used three doubles in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead.

Carolina tied the game at two in the bottom of the fifth. Parker Noland led off the inning with a double to left. He scored on Ryan Bakes’ double to left. The Gamecocks went on top in the bottom of the sixth as Tyler Causey tripled to score Cole Messina and he then came home on a wild pitch. Georgia State scored a run in the seventh, but Garrett Gainey put up zeroes in the eighth and ninth frames as the Gamecocks improved to 14-3 on the year.

Matthew Becker earned the win on the mound, striking out a pair in 1.1 innings of relief. Eddie Copper started for Carolina. He allowed three hits and two runs with six strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Gainey picked up his second save with five strikeouts in two innings.

Messina had two hits to lead Carolina’s offense with Causey collecting his first triple as a collegian.
