Warren's Double Helps No. 22 Gamecocks Take Down No. 16 Bulldogs
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Bre Warren’s two-run double in the bottom of the sixth led the 22nd ranked South Carolina softball team (28-12, 4-8) past No. 16 Mississippi State (28-10, 8-7) 3-1 Sunday afternoon (April 7).
Zoe Laneaux led Carolina going 2-for-3 with an RBI on the day.
Alana Vawter (12-6) threw a complete game, scattering four hits and striking out a pair of Bulldogs.
South Carolina jumped out to the early lead in the first inning. With one out, Riley Blampied doubled to left for her 150th career hit. Two pitches later, Laneaux singled up the middle to score Blampied.
MSU tied it in the second on a walk and single.
The Gamecocks looked to extend the lead in the fourth on a home run by Kianna Jones, but the runner at second was called out for leaving early, taking the runs off the scoreboard.
Carolina would get both of those runs back in the sixth. With one out, Jones and Aniyah Black reached on back-to-back singles. Then, with a 1-1 count, Warren hit one to the wall and off a diving MSU right fielder, scoring pinch runners Marissa Gonzalez and Kyye Ricks.
The Bulldogs got a leadoff single in the seventh, but Vawter shutdown Mississippi State and retired the next three batters to earn the victory.
South Carolina hosts the Palmetto Series Presented by the South Carolina Education Lottery Tuesday at 7 p.m., with the game being broadcast on ESPNU.
