Baseball Travels to Charlotte for Matchup vs. North Carolina

FOR STARTERS

  • South Carolina travels to Truist Field, home of the Charlotte Knights, to face North Carolina in Charlotte on Tuesday night (April 9) at 7 p.m.
  • Tuesday’s game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.

SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA

  • The Tar Heels come into Tuesday’s contest with a 26-6 overall record and an 11-4 mark in the ACC.
  • UNC won the final game of the series at Virginia, 12-7, behind three hits and four RBI from Georgia transfer Parks Harber and three hits and three runs scored by Anthony Donofrio.
  • Gavin Gallaher leads UNC with a .375 batting average while Harber has 11 home runs and 31 RBI.
  • Freshman lefty Folger Boaz will get the start on Tuesday. He has made eight starts and has 35 strikeouts in 36.2 innings pitched.
  • As a team, the Tar Heels are hitting .314 and has a .532 slugging percentage.
  • Matt Poston has four saves in 14 appearances, while Dalton Pence has three saves and a 2.25 ERA.
  • Scott Forbes is in his fourth season as head coach of the Tar Heels and has been on the UNC staff for 23 seasons. Forbes has been a part of seven College World Series appearances at UNC.

SERIES VS. NORTH CAROLINA

  • North Carolina leads the all-time series with South Carolina 64-39-1, but the Gamecocks have won three of the last four games, all in Charlotte.
  • The Gamecocks shut out the Tar Heels, 5-0, on April 4, 2023, as Evan Stone had a pair of hits and Matthew Becker struck out four in a three-inning start.
  • The last seven matchups between the two schools have taken place in Charlotte.

GAMECOCKS LEAD THE NATION IN WALKS

  • Carolina has drawn 232 walks in 32 games this season, which leads the country in free passes. The Gamecocks lead second place Texas A&M by six walks.
  • Ethan Petry leads the team with 30 walks, which is tied for fifth in the SEC.
  • The Gamecocks walked 18 times in the 22-6 win over Longwood on March 10. It’s the most dating back to 2005 (first year of game-by-game stats available).
  • Carolina is averaging 7.25 walks per game.
  • The Gamecocks also are fourth in the SEC and 20th nationally in on-base percentage (.426).

PETRY: 30 FOR 3(6)

  • Sophomore Ethan Petry hit a home run in the 6-5 win over Texas A&M which was his 36th career round tripper.
  • Petry is now in a tie for 13th place on Carolina’s all-time home runs list and is the 29th Gamecock to hit 30 or more home runs in a career.
  • The last player to achieve that feat was Braylen Wimmer (2020-23), who had 32 career home runs. Wes Clarke (2019-21) also had 32 home runs in his Gamecock career.
  • Petry is tied with Derick Urquhart (1995-98) for 13th place. He is two back of Eric Stanton (1996-98) for the 12th spot.

GOOD GREAT VS. TEXAS A&M

  • Fifth year senior Ty Good pitched a season high 5.2 innings of relief April 6 vs. Texas A&M, striking out six and allowing just two hits and an unearned run.
  • Good is now 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA and has 35 strikeouts in 28 innings pitched.
  • Good now has 29 career wins with 309 strikeouts between the College of Charleston and South Carolina.

BECKER SHINES IN SUNDAY WIN

  • Junior Matthew Becker struck out a season high eight batters in a four-inning start in a 6-5 win over Texas A&M on April 7.
  • Becker did not allow a walk while giving up five hits and a run as the Gamecocks picked up the one-run win.
  • This season, Becker is 4-1 with a 3.38 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 26.2 innings pitched.
  • Becker now has made 49 appearances in his Carolina career with 10 wins and 176 strikeouts.

MILESTONE CENTRAL

  • Head Coach Mark Kingston earned his 200th win at South Carolina in the Presbyterian game on March 26. Kingston now has 202 wins at Carolina and 475 wins overall.
  • Ethan Petry recorded his 100th career RBI in the Presbyterian win. Petry now has 106 RBI in only 94 career games.
  • Cole Messina recorded his 100th career hit at Carolina March 26 vs. Presbyterian. Messina now has 108 hits, joining Talmadge LeCroy (104) and Ethan Petry (118) in the 100-hit club at Carolina.
  • Ty Good recorded his 300th career strikeout March 30 at Alabama. Good has 309 strikeouts between the College of Charleston and Carolina.
  • Kennedy Jones and Parker Noland both are in the 200-hit club in college. Jones has 208 hits between UNC Greensboro and Carolina while Noland has 216 hits between Vanderbilt and Carolina.
