Baseball Earns One-Run Win over North Carolina

CHARLOTTE  – Dylan Brewer went 3-for-4 with a go-ahead double in the eighth and Connor McCreery struck out five in 2.1 innings of relief as the University of South Carolina baseball team defeated No. 13 North Carolina, 2-1, on Tuesday night (April 9) at Truist Field.

Brewer brought in Talmadge LeCroy with the double to the gap in right with no one out in the eighth. He had three of Carolina’s 10 hits on the night. Ethan Petry and Parker Noland had two hits apiece. Carolina scored its first run in the third on Gavin Casas’ RBI groundout.

The Gamecock pitching staff held UNC to six hits and a run. Roman Kimball struck out five in 2.2 innings. Dylan Eskew started for the Gamecocks and did not allow a run in 3.1 innings with a strikeout.

North Carolina tied the game in the seventh on Colby Wilkerson’s double but the Gamecocks retook the lead in the eighth.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Carolina has now won four of the last five games against the Tar Heels.
  • The Gamecocks handed UNC’s Matthew Matthijs his second loss of the year. He leads the NCAA with 11 wins.
  • The Gamecocks turned three double plays on the night.
