Hamner Marks Record Book in Team’s Loss to No. 13 Florida
Gainesville, Fla. – No. 18 South Carolina women’s tennis fell to No. 13 Florida in Gainesville on Saturday. The Gators took the doubles point and were able to claim three singles matches for the 4-2 victory.
During the loss, junior Sarah Hamner etched her name into the record books by becoming the winningest player in SEC matches in program history. Her victory over No. 65 Sara Dahlstom makes her 10-1 in SEC matches on the season with the prior season-best SEC record a 9-2 mark that was twice achieved by teammate Ayana Akli along with four other Gamecocks.
The win was Hamner’s 30th of the season with the junior now having a 30-6 overall singles record with a 17-1 mark in dual action.
In doubles, the point stayed with Florida thanks to a pair of 6-2 wins from the Nos. 2 and 3 positions.
In singles play, the Gators and Gamecocks traded points with No. 80 Carly Briggs tallying a win over Shahar Biran then followed by Hamners victory over Dahstrom.
The two teams then traded points again with No. 11 Rachel Gailis of Florida defeating No. 7 Akli at the top of the lineup and South Carolina’s Elise Mills defeating Alicia Dudeney 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 from the No. 4 position.
Florida’s clinch came from Court 5 where Misa Malkin dropped a hard-fought battle to No. 115 Qavia Lopez. The Gamecock took the first set 7-6(5) but the Gator battled back to take the next two 6-2, 7-6(5), clinching the match.
Olympe Lancelot was on her way to a win at the No. 6 position up 4-1 in the third set when play was suspended.
The Gamecocks now await the release of the SEC Championship draw. The seeding and draw will be created after the conclusion of all SEC matches on Sunday.
