Gamecocks Cap Home Season with USC Outdoor Open

COLUMBIA, S.C. (April 20, 2024) – South Carolina Track & Field closed out the 2024 home schedule on Saturday after competing in the USC Outdoor Open. Prior to the start of the running events, the Gamecock coaching staff honored the 20 graduating seniors in a special ceremony.

The Gamecock men accounted for nine Top-3 finishes on the day, including a pair from talented freshman Nyck Harbor. The dual-sport athlete ran a personal best time of 10.12 (2.0) in the men’s 100m to finish third overall, accounting for the third fastest time in program history. In addition to his program ranking, Harbor’s time stands fifth in the East Region and ninth in the NCAA. Harbor finished runner-up in the men’s 200m, trailing only World Champion Matthew Boling. The Washington, D.C. native ran a personal best time of 20.38w (2.9) for the silver medal finish.

In the men’s 400m, a pair of Gamecocks went second and third as Jasauna Dennis and Jayson Ward accounted for new personal bests. Dennis clocked 46.42 for the runner-up finish and the 25th best time in the East, while Ward ran 46.59 to finish third with the 32nd fastest time in the region. The final Top-3 finish on the track for the Gamecock men came from David Warmington who tied a personal best in the men’s 110-meter hurdle. Warmington clocked 13.79w (2.7) to finish third overall.

There were four field event Top-3 finishes for Carolina, including a pair from the men’s shot put. CJ Licata improved on his personal best and reclaimed second place in the NCAA from teammate Dylan Targgart after throwing 20.51m (67-3.5) for the second best throw in Carolina history. Targgart finished third overall in the event when he threw 19.99m (65-7). The Michigan native was able to come up with a runner-up finish in the men’s discus, throwing 55.60m (182-5) to finish behind Malik Paul as the top collegian finisher. Jaden Price-Whitehead accounted for the final Top-3 finish for the men’s field athletes, jumping a personal best distance of 7.13m (23-4.75) in the men’s long jump to finish third.

The women corralled five Top-3 finishes, led by the women’s 4x100m relay team of Jayla Jamison, Cynteria James, Zaya Akins and JaMeesia Ford who won the lone event for the Gamecocks with a time of 43.39. The women’s 4x400m relay squad of Jahnile Registre, James, Ashton Lindley and Emily Pierontoni secured third place after clocking 3:46.88.

The final three podium finishes for the women all fell on the track beginning with Jamison in the women’s 200m after stopping the clock at 23.37 (0.9) to finish third. Registre joined her in the bronze medal category from the 400m race after clocking 53.01. The final bronze medal finish was by the feet of Gabriella Gait-Smith who ran 4:40.40 in the women’s 1500m.

Sienna Lydon jumped into the Gamecock Top-10 record book in the women’s javelin when she threw a personal best of 38.10m (125-0) to finish fifth overall. Her throw was a personal best improvement by 3.5 meters and now ranks ninth all time in program history.

The Gamecocks will close out the regular season next weekend when South Carolina travels up I-77 to Charlotte for the Charlotte Invitational on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27.
