Baseball's Gainey Named to NCBWA Midseason Stopper of the Year Watch List

DALLAS – University of South Carolina relief pitcher Garrett Gainey has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Midseason Stopper of the Year Watch List, the organization announced today (Wednesday, April 24).

Gainey is one of 59 pitchers on the list, with the award given to the best relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. Gainey is tied for the SEC lead with six saves and has a 3.96 ERA in 15 appearances this season. He has struck out 36 batters in 25 innings pitched, including a season-high six on March 2 vs. Clemson. Gainey earned saves in back-to-back wins over Vanderbilt on March 23 and had a save in the win over current No. 1 Texas A&M on April 7.

The NCBWA will announce the finalists on Wednesday, June 5 with the winner being named on Friday, June 14 at the 2024 College World Series.

Carolina will host No. 3 Kentucky on Friday, April 26 at 7 p.m. at Founders Park. The game will be streamed on SEC Network Plus.
