Baseball Uses Power Surge, Bullpen to Defeat Alabama in SEC Tournament Opener

HOOVER  – The University of South Carolina baseball team belted four home runs, including a grand slam from Dalton Reeves, and received a stellar performance out of the pen from Chris Veach as the Gamecocks defeated Alabama, 10-5, Tuesday afternoon (May 21) on the opening day of the 2024 SEC Tournament at the Hoover Met.

Carolina erupted for a six-run third inning. Gavin Casas led off with a solo home run and two batters, later, Ethan Petry hit his 21st home run over the fence in left. After singles from Blake Jackson and Cole Messina, Carolina received a two-out walk to Kennedy Jones. Reeves then came up and hit a 2-0 pitch over the fence in right for the Gamecocks’ first grand slam of the season.

Messina homered in the fifth and doubled to bring in two runs in the seventh. Carolina added a run in the eighth on its way to getting into the double elimination portion of the tournament.

 

Veach was outstanding, striking out six in 5.2 inning of relief, allowing no runs and no walks with three hits. Matthew Becker had three strikeouts in two innings of relief.

Petry, Jackson and Messina had three hits apiece as the Gamecocks belted 14 hits on the day. Reeves had four RBI and Casas was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Petry is now in the top five in home run in his Carolina career. He has 44 round trippers.
  • Messina has 19 doubles, which leads the team, to go along with 17 home runs. He now has 34 career home runs.
  • Veach threw a season high in pitches in the win on Tuesday.
  • Carolina earned its second win overall against Alabama in the SEC Tournament.
