Baseball Quintet Named to Academic All-District Team
COLUMBIA – Five University of South Carolina baseball student-athletes were named to the 2023-24 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team, it was announced this afternoon (Tuesday, June 4).
Matthew Becker, Gavin Casas, Dylan Eskew, Cole Messina and Ethan Petry all were named to the team. Messina and Petry both will advance to the Academic All-America ballot with the All-America teams announced on July 2.
All five Gamecocks have been on either the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll or the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll. Becker earns Academic All-District honors for the second straight season.
To qualify for Academic All-District, student-athletes must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point-average. Graduate students must have a 3.50 GPA in both undergraduate and grad school. Student-athletes also must compete in 90 percent of the institution’s games or must start in at least 66 percent of the games. Pitchers must make either 17 appearances or 25 innings pitched. Each school has a cap of five student-athletes on the Academic All-District list.
Carolina (37-25) advanced to its 35th NCAA Tournament in 2024, playing in the Raleigh Regional. Carolina also advanced to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament for the first time since 2017.
