Samuel Named ITA Singles All-American

Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis senior Toby Samuel has been named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Singles All-American as announced by the organization on Thursday. This marks the second consecutive season that Samuel has earned the honor in singles and third time of his career that he has earned an All-America recognition.

The ITA names All-Americans based off earning a top 16 seed in the NCAA Singles Tournament, advancing to the Round of 16 in the tournament, or finishing in the top-20 of the ITA singles rankings.

For Samuel, he earned the honor before the NCAA Singles Tournament even began after entering the draw as the No. 5 seed.

Samuel began the spring outside of the rankings after having taken the fall semester off and quickly worked his way up, ending with a final rank of No. 9 thanks to his 21-6 overall record.

Of Samuel’s 21 wins, 14 of them came over ranked opponents with six of them in the top-50. He also became the first player in program history to go perfect in SEC play with a 10-0 record against conference opponents.

Across his four-year career, Samuel tallied 98 singles wins with 41 of them from the top of the singles lineup. His 41 wins from the No. 1 position are the second most in program history.

Samuel wrapped his collegiate career as a two-time singles All-American, doubles All-American, and a two-time qualifier for both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Tournaments.
