Friedman, Kantor Win Doubles Title at Debbie Southern
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Sophomore Anna Kantor and senior transfer Laura Friedman added a pair of wins to claim the Flight 4 Doubles title for South Carolina women’s tennis at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic Saturday. The Gamecocks added three singles win to their day-two total at the event.
In the Doubles Flight 4 semifinals, the Gamecock duo was locked in a back-and-forth battle with NC State’s Mia Slama and Gabia Paskauskas before scraping out a 7-6(6) victory. Kantor and Friedman then faced Alexa Griffith and Marissa Pennings from the home team, Furman, in the title match, who they handily dispatched 6-2.
In singles, Kaitlyn Carnicella shook off Friday’s tough three-set loss to a top-50 opponent to post her first ranked win as a Gamecock, defeating No. 108 Gabriella Broadfoot of NC State 7-5, 6-2 in a Flight 1 consolation match. Carnicella will face Kentucky’s Zoe Hammond in the consolation final on Sunday.
Misa Malkin and Jana Stojanova also bounced back from their opening-day losses to record their first singles wins of the season in Flights 2 and 5, respectively.
All six Gamecocks at the event will close out play on Sunday with a final round of singles play. Live streaming of select matches is available via TrackTennis.
