Gamecocks Stay Undefeated with Fifth Run-Rule Win of the Season
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina softball team (9-0) secured its fifth run-rule victory of the season with a 12-2 win over Miami (Ohio) (2-6) Saturday night (Feb. 15). The 9-0 start is the best for the Gamecocks since 1996 when they started the season 12-0.
Quincee Lilio continued to prove she can get on base at the top of the order. She walked in all four of her plate appearances, coming home to score twice. Karley Shelton, in the two-hole, also reached base in her four plate appearances, finishing with three walks and a double. Abigail Knight was also perfect on the night, finishing 2-for-2 with a walk.
All told, the Gamecocks finished with 10 walks in the game, one off the program record.
Arianna Rodi drew a walked to load the bases in the top of the first and later scored on a wild pitch to put the first run on the board. Miami got the run back in the top of the second
In the fourth inning, Carolina’s offense came alive. Natalie Heath singled to left field on a full count to bring home Knight. Both Shelton and Rodi then drew bases-loaded walks. An RBI single from Ella Chancey rounded out the scoring before a 27-minute rain delay halted play.
After the delay, the Gamecocks were able to pick up right where they left off. Two pitches in Brooke Blankenship doubled down the right field line to score a pair of runners. Five straight South Carolina batters brough home a run after the delay. Shelton capped off the 11-run inning with a two-out RBI double.
The RedHawks scored a run in the fifth, but Sam Gress was able to get out of a bases loaded jam and secure her first win in the circle as a Gamecock. Gress struck out three Miami batters in her complete game victory.
South Carolina closes out the Carolina Classic against App State Sunday (Feb. 16) at 5 p.m.
