
Baseball Bests Queens for Fifth Straight Win
COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team moved to 5-0 on the year with a 7-2 victory over Queens Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 19) at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park. The Gamecocks scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to stretch out the lead on a cool night in Columbia.
The Gamecocks got on the board just three batters in as Ethan Petry brought in Nathan Hall, who doubled to start the frame. Carolina scored on a Henry Kaczmar sacrifice fly and a KJ Scobey RBI groundout in the sixth. Queens plated a pair in the top of the eighth on a Justin Hudson two-run single, but Carolina scored four in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by run-scoring hits from Hall and Petry.
Hall was 4-for-5 with two runs scored while Petry went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Kennedy Jones added two hits for the offense.
Carolina’s pitching staff allowed just three hits on the night. Ryder Garino earned the win in relief, striking out five and allowing one hit and one walk in three innings. Jackson Soucie had a pair of strikeouts in a three-inning start.
POSTGAME NOTES
- Hall is now hitting .500 on the season (9-for-18) with three doubles, a home run and six RBI. He’s tied with Petry for the RBI lead.
- Carolina has won all three meetings with Queens in school history.
- Game time temperature was 36 degrees at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.
- Roman Kimball made his first appearance of the season, recording the final two outs of the game.
