
Woita, Pitzer Key Baseball's Friday Win over Milwaukee
COLUMBIA – Jase Woita’s sixth inning grand slam and eight strikeouts in relief from Tyler Pitzer gave the University of South Carolina baseball team a 5-2 win over Milwaukee Friday afternoon (Feb. 21) at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.
Nathan Hall led off the sixth with a single. He moved to second on a wild pitch and went to third as Kennedy Jones was hit by a pitch and Talmadge LeCroy walked. Woita to an 0-1 pitch the opposite way to left field for his first home run as a Gamecock. Carolina scored its first run in the second on Nolan Nawrocki’s sacrifice fly.
Milwaukee had a pair of runs in the third but Tyler Pitzer came in and did not allow a run with the eight strikeouts, four hits and two walks to pick up his first win of the season. Zach Russell pitched two innings of scoreless relief and Brendan Sweeney earned his third save with a strikeout in the ninth.
Ethan Petry, Woita and Dalton Mashore each had two hits apiece for Carolina. Woita also scored two runs and had the four RBI.
POSTGAME NOTES
- Today’s meeting between the two teams was the first in program history.
- Woita is now 5-for-11 with six RBI and a .722 slugging percentage this season.
- Petry and Hall each have had at least one hit in all six games this season.
- Sweeney is the current SEC leader in saves with three.
