
Baseball Clinches Milwaukee Series with Saturday Win
COLUMBIA – Matthew Becker struck out eight and did not allow a walk in 6.1 innings and the University of South Carolina baseball team scored four runs in the second inning in a 6-3 win over Milwaukee Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22) at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.
Becker allowed just three hits and two runs in an 86-pitch outing to improve to 2-0 on the season. Brandon Stone came in and recorded his first save of his Carolina career, striking out a batter and allowing a hit and a run in 2.2 innings.
In the second, Jase Woita walked and Talmadge LeCroy was hit by a pitch to open the frame. Henry Kaczmar walked to load the bases and KJ Scobey came in and drove in a pair with a single to center. Jordan Carrion, who had two hits on the day, singled to right to bring in Kaczmar. Carolina made it 4-0 on a Nathan Hall sacrifice fly.
Milwaukee scored a run in the fourth on a sun double and RBI single from Tyler Bickers. Carolina came back and made it a four-run game with Ethan Petry’s solo shot to center field, his 46th career home run at Carolina. The Panthers had solo home runs in the sixth and ninth. Carolina added a run in the seventh as Petry’s double play plated Carrion.
Carrion had two of Carolina’s six hits in the win, while Scobey drove in a pair.
POSTGAME NOTES
- Petry now has a hit in all seven games for the Gamecocks.
- Petry moved into fourth place by himself on Carolina’s all-time home run list with 46, breaking the tie he held with Jeff Parnell. He is one home run away from tying Garrett Carter for third place on the all-time list.
- Becker now has 17 strikeouts and no walks on the year in two outings.
- Carolina has recorded saves in four of its seven wins.
- The Gamecocks are 7-0 to start the year for the second time in the last three seasons.
