COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team went 5-0 on the week, winning a pair of midweek contests against Winthrop and Queens and sweeping a three-game series over Milwaukee.

NOTES:
Carolina has started the season 8-0 for the second time in the last three seasons. The Gamecocks’ pitching staff has 99 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched while holding opponents to a .148 batting average. Carolina is 17-of-19 in stolen bases and are led offensively by Ethan Petry’s .444 average and nine RBI.
Brendan Sweeney currently leads the SEC with three saves, picking up two this week in wins over Winthrop and Milwaukee (Friday). Sweeney has three strikeouts and allowed one hit and one walks in three innings pitched.
Matthew Becker has his second straight solid performance in a Saturday start in the 6-3 win over Milwaukee. Becker struck out eight batters and did not allow a walk in 6.1 innings pitched. Becker, through 11.1 innings, has 17 strikeouts with no walks and a 2-0 record with a 1.59 ERA.
Jase Woita’s grand slam was the difference in the 5-2 win over Milwaukee on Friday. His two-out shot to left in the sixth inning was his first as a Gamecock. Woita is hitting .357 with six RBI and three runs scored this season.
Carolina hosts Gardner-Webb in the midweek and then prepares for its annual in-state series with Clemson, starting Friday in the Upstate.
