
Gamecocks Sweep Arkansas to Pick Up Fifth Conference Win
Columbia, S.C. – The No. 21 South Carolina women’s tennis team swept Arkansas 4-0 at home on Sunday afternoon to earn its fifth conference win of the season.
The Gamecocks got off to a hot start in doubles play when Helena Buchwald and Lauren Friedman swept Gomez Alonso and Katarina Pavlechova 6-0. No. 26 Kaitlyn Carnicella and Sarah Hamner finished their match next, falling 3-6, leveling the score.
It came down to No. 77 Bella Bergkvist Larsson and Olympe Lancelot who were battling from the No. 2 position. The Gamecocks pulled through to dominantly win the match 6-2 against Anet Koskel and Grace O’Donnell, clinching the doubles point.
All six Gamecocks took first set wins to open up singles play. Hamner, Carnicella and Buchwald won by margins of 6-3. Larsson had a 7-5 showing and Lancelot won her set on a tie-break 7-6. No. 113 Misa Malkin shutout her opponent 6-0.
For the third meet of conference play it was the bottom half of the lineup that carried South Carolina to a win. Malkin pushed the Gamecock lead to 2-0 by winning her second set 6-1, reaching her 11th singles victory of the season. Buchwald followed up with another Gamecock point on the scoreboard after sweeping her second set 6-0, setting her 5-1 in conference play.
Larsson clinched the Gamecock sweep with a 6-2 second set win over Grace O’Donnell, securing the 4-0 victory.
The Gamecocks will hit the road for their next two matches, starting with a trip to Mississippi State on Fri., March 28 at 3:00 p.m.
