Baseball Falls in Series Opener vs. Tennessee

COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team dropped the series opener to No. 1 Tennessee, 11-7, on Friday night (March 28) at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.

South Carolina took a 2-1 lead after one inning on Ethan Petry’s two-run home run. The Volunteers came back with five unearned runs in the second and added four runs in the top of the fifth. Carolina got one back in the fifth as Jordan Carrion scored on a wild pitch and two in the sixth on run-scoring singles by Carrion and Henry Kaczmar.

Tennessee put up a run in the ninth to make it 11-5. Kaczmar hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame to end the scoring.

Petry and Carrion had four hits apiece while Kaczmar had two hits and drove in three runs. Hall also added two hits. Jake McCoy took the loss, allowing three earned runs with three strikeouts on six hits in four-plus innings. Caleb Jones pitched four innings of relief, allowing just one hit with one run and two strikeouts with no walks.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Hall extended his hit streak to 17 games.
  • Petry hit his 51st career home run with the two-run shot in the first. He’s now 11 home runs away from tying Justin Smoak for Carolina’s all-time home run list.
  • Petry tied his career high with four hits in a game. He had four hits in his freshman season at Georgia (March 18, 2023).
  • Carrion also tied his career high in hits. He had four hits while at Florida State against Louisville on April 16, 2022.
