Gamecocks Defeat Mississippi State on the Road

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The No. 23 South Carolina women’s tennis team defeated No. 66 Mississippi State on the road 4-2, earning a comeback victory after dropping the doubles point.

The Bulldogs came out swinging in doubles as all three courts led throughout the entire matches. Mississippi State officially clinched the doubles point with wins from the No. 2 and 3 positions. Bella Bergkvist Larsson and Olympe Lancelot fell 2-6 while Helena Buchwald and Lauren Friedman fell 4-6.

Sarah Hamner got the Gamecocks on the board first with a 6-0, 6-3 victory from the top of the lineup. Misa Malkin leveled out the score to 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win. The Bulldogs then regained the lead, extending the score to 3-2 after Chiara Di Genova defeated Buchwald 6-3, 6-2.

Kaitlyn Carnicella brought the game back to a draw following a three-set comeback, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. For the second consecutive match, it was Larsson who clinched the win from the No. 5 position. She also battled through a three-set comeback, defeating Athina Pitta 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

The Gamecocks continue their road trip on Sun., March 30, heading to No. 32 Alabama for a 12:00 p.m. (ET) match.
