Baseball Earns Run-Rule Win over Presbyterian

COLUMBIA –  The University of South Carolina baseball team scored five runs in the sixth and added four in the seventh in an 11-1 run-rule victory over Presbyterian Tuesday night (April 1) at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.

Carolina took a 2-1 lead through three innings of play after Ethan Petry’s two-run home run. The game remained that way until the top of the sixth as Gavin Braland’s two-out RBI brought in Nathan Hall and Petry. A bases loaded walk added one more before Hall singled down the left side to plate Henry Kaczmar and Cayden Gaskin to make it 7-1.

A pair of errors by the Presbyterian defense scored four in the bottom of the seventh, giving Carolina the seven-inning win.

Jackson Soucie earned the win for Carolina, striking out two in his one inning of work. Parker Marlatt and Brendan Sweeney each pitched a hitless inning of relief.

Petry and Hall lead the team with two hits and two RBI apiece.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Petry hit his 52nd career home run with the two-run shot in the first. He’s now 10 home runs away from tying Justin Smoak for Carolina’s all-time home run list. Carolina hit
  • The 11-1 victory marked South Carolina’s fourth run-rule victory of the season.
  • Hall now has a team-best 13 multi-hit games while Petry leads the Gamecocks with seven multi-RBI performances.
