Gamecocks Wrap Up Home Matches for the Season

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 18 South Carolina women’s tennis team is set to wrap up its home matches for the season this weekend. The Gamecocks host No. 66 Missouri on Fri., April 4 at 11:30 a.m. before closing out their time at the Carolina Tennis Center on Sun., April 6 against No. 13 Vanderbilt at 1:00 p.m.

Prior to Sunday’s match, Sarah Hamner, Misa Malkin, and Olympe Lancelot will be honored for their time with the Gamecocks as they compete on South Carolina’s home courts for the final time.

Gamecock Notables

  • Records: 12-7 (overall), 7-4 (SEC), 8-1 (home), 3-5 (away)
  • The Gamecocks are coming off a 2-0 road trip last week where they defeated two ranked opponents. On Friday, South Carolina defeated then-No. 66 Mississippi State 4-2 in a comeback win after dropping the doubles point from the No. 2 and 3 positions. Hamner (6-0, 6-3), Kaitlyn Carnicella (6-4, 1-6, 6-1), Malkin (6-2, 6-2) and Bella Bergkvist Larsson (3-6, 6-1, 6-1) all earned singles wins to secure the victory for the Garnet & Black.
  • South Carolina delivered a 4-1 win over then-No. 32 Alabama to round out the weekend. Lauren Friedman and Helena Buchwald had a dominant doubles performance, shutting out their opponents 6-0 before Hamner and Carnicella sealed the first point of the match with a 6-4 victory. In singles, Hamner (6-4, 6-3), Lancelot (6-4, 6-2) and Friedman (6-3, 6-3) picked up wins to clinch the match for the Gamecocks.
  • South Carolina achieved its highest team ranking of the season, reaching No. 18 in the latest ITA rankings released earlier this week. Hamner and Carnicella also earned season high marks in singles rankings, coming in at No.17 and No. 59 respectively. Malkin rounded out the singles rankings for the Gamecocks at No. 97. In doubles, Hamner and Carnicella are No. 31 while Carnicella and Lancelot are No. 64.
  • Malkin (12-3) and Larsson (11-5) lead the team in singles records from the No. 4 and 5 positions.

Scouting the Tigers

  • Records: 12-10 (overall), 2-9 (SEC), 8-5 (home), 3-5 (away)
  • Missouri is coming off of a split doubleheader in Baton Rouge this past Sunday. The Tigers first fell 0-4 to then-No. 6 LSU before shutting out Southeastern Louisiana 4-0.
  • Korina Roso has a solid 9-3 singles record. Inah Canete and Roso hold a 6-2 doubles standing, currently riding on a seven-match win streak.

Scouting the Commodores

  • Records: 15-4 (overall), 8-3 (SEC), 9-1 (home), 5-2 (away)
  • Vanderbilt is coming off of a significant 5-2 upset win over then-No. 6 LSU this past Friday at home before the team wrapped up the week with another 5-2 win over Ole Miss on the road. The team faces No. 1 Georgia on Fri., April 4 before coming to Columbia.
  • The Commodores’ No. 1 singles player, Celia-Belle Mohr boasts a 11-3 record. Valeria Ray (14-2) and Bridget Stammel (11-4) hold strong records as well. Mohr and Sophia Webster are undefeated in doubles this dual match season from the No. 1 position, entering this weekend with a 10-0 record.
  • Mohr ranks No. 16 in singles followed by Stammel (No. 45) and Ray (No. 78). In doubles, Mohr and Webster are tabbed at No. 14.

Series History

  • South Carolina is undefeated against Missouri, entering tomorrow’s match with a 12-0 series record that dates back to 2013.
  • The Gamecocks and Commodores have a close all-time series record led by Vanderbilt, 24-19. South Carolina has won the past two consecutive matches.
