Gamecocks Fall to No. 13 Vanderbilt
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 18 South Carolina women’s tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 13 Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon.
The Gamecocks started off shaky in doubles as all three pairs were trailing on each court. Sarah Hamner and Kaitlyn Carnicella then began to flip the script, overcoming a 1-3 deficit to level out their match at 3-all. Shortly after, the Commodores struck first as Misa Malkin and Lauren Friedman lost 2-6 to provide Vanderbilt an early edge.
The doubles point came down to the No. 1 and 2 positions who were both in tight matches. Carnicella & Hamner were able to take the lead over No. 14 Celia-Belle Mohr and Sophia Webster, jumping to a 5-4 score while Bella Bergkvist Larsson and Olympe Lancelot were locked at 4-4 in their match. The Commodores then turned on the gas and surged ahead, defeating Larsson and Lancelot 6-4 to officially claim the doubles point.
The Gamecocks persevered at the beginning of singles, picking up first set wins from Malkin (6-3), Hamner (7-5) and Carnicella (6-4). The Commodores remained persistent, defeating Friedman and Lancelot in their opening sets. Larsson was resilient against her opponent, fighting back from a 3-5 deficit to tie it up at 5-all. The two went back and forth before forcing a tiebreak after taking the set to 6-all. The freshman jumped to a 4-1 lead but was unable to follow through as Trinetra Vijayakumar topped her 6-4 in the tiebreak.
The Commodores extended their lead to 3-0 with wins from the No. 3 and 6 positions before Hamner got the Gamecocks on the board after cruising to a 6-1 showing in her second set. Vanderbilt officially clinched the match at 4-1 when Larsson dropped her second set 2-6. Carnicella grabbed the Gamecocks’ second point after defeating her opponent in straight sets before the match concluded on court 4 where Malkin fell in a three-set battle.
The Gamecocks wrap up regular season in Texas, facing Texas A&M on Fri., April 11 at 6:00 p.m. before closing out 2025 dual matches in Austin on Sun., April 13 at 1:00 p.m.
