No. 10 Gamecocks Earn Series Win Over No. 19 Ole Miss
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 10/9 South Carolina softball team (30-8, 6-6) took the series win against No. 19/20 Ole Miss (29-9, 6-6) in a 4-2 win Sunday afternoon (Apr. 6).
Jori Heard (13-2) earned the win, scattered five hits and two strikeouts over 5 2-3 innings. Gress took over on the mound in the fifth and finished out the game giving up just two hits and striking out one to earn her third save of the season. Neither pitcher walked a batter on the day.
Ole Miss jumped out to an early 1-0 first inning lead but the Gamecocks were quick to respond in the bottom of the frame.
Arianna Rodi started off the inning with a single to extend her on-base streak to 30 games. Karley Shelton followed it up with another single before a walk to Abigail Knight loaded the bases for Lexi Winters. Winters doubled off the top of the wall in left field to score the first two runs for South Carolina.
Brooke Blankenship wrapped up scoring with a two-run single down the right field line to score Winters and Knight, bringing the lead to 4-1.
Ole Miss scored one run in the sixth, but it would not be enough to top the Gamecocks.
Shelton led the offense going 3-for-3. Winters and Blankenship led the team with two RBIs a piece.
The Gamecocks wrap up their homestand back at Beckham Field April 9 to face Charleston Southern at 6 p.m.
