Gamecocks Fall at No. 2 Texas A&M
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 21 South Carolina women’s tennis team suffered a 4-0 loss at No. 2 Texas A&M on Friday evening.
The Aggies were able to jump to an early advantage after picking up wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions in doubles. Nicole Khirin and Lexington Reed defeated Lauren Friedman and Misa Malkin 6-4 shortly before Bella Bergkvist Larsson and Olympe Lancelot fell to Mia Kupres and Daria Smetannikov 6-3 despite an attempted late rally from the Gamecocks.
South Carolina faced tough competition in singles as the top five positions played against ranked opponents. Anna Claire Roof fell first as Lexington Reed won 6-0, 6-2 to advance the Aggies lead to 2-0.
No. 13 Sarah Hamner was resilient against No. 2 Mary Stoiana, pushing her to a tiebreak after taking the match to 6-6 where the Aggie ultimately came out on top 7-6(4).
Before Hamner could retaliate, Malkin and Lancelot dropped their matches within seconds of each other from the No. 3 and 4 positions which allowed Texas A&M to clinch the victory.
The Gamecocks head over to Austin to wrap up the regular season against No. 14 Texas on Sun., April 13 at 1:00 p.m.
