Perfect Day 2 for Gamecock Women’s Tennis
GREENVILLE, S.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis won every match it played on Day 2 of the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic at Mickel Tennis Center on Saturday. At the top of the wins list was a ranked win to claim the Doubles Flight 1 title for Kaitlyn Carnicella and Bella Bergqvist Larsson.
The Gamecocks’ top duo wasted little time posting their first win over a ranked duo with a 6-3 victory over No. 49 Kate Dmitrichenko and Mariia Hlahola of Texas Tech. It marks the second straight season that South Carolina has one at least one flight of doubles at the tournament. Newcomers Taylor Goetz and Jane Dunyon picked up their first win as a doubles team with a 6-3 win over Alabama’s Mariia Adrienko and Addison Bowman in Flight 2.
In singles, three Gamecocks will play for their flight titles on Sunday after gutty performances on Saturday afternoon. In the top flight, No. 24 Carnicella edged out Wake Forest’s Krystal Blanch 7-5 in the first set before cruising in the second, 6-0. In Flight 2, Bergqvist Larsson also faced a challenge in the first set, needing a late break to get ahead of Asuncion Jadue of Kentucky then sealed her spot in the final with a 6-2 second set. Playing in her first tournament as a Gamecock Goetz continued her win streak with a three-set win in Flight 4. Facing Sankavi Gownder of Wake Forest, the junior claimed the first set 6-3 before seeing the second slip away late at 5-7. Goetz held her nerve in the third with a 6-4 victory that put her in the final.
Dunyon posted her the first singles win of her college career in the consolation side of the Flight 5 bracket, cruising past Eleni Karantali of Georgia Tech 6-2, 6-3 to earn a spot in the consolation final. Freshman Sara Borkop also moved into her consolation final after her opponent had to retire early in the first set.
