Two More Titles for Gamecock Women’s Tennis
GREENVILLE, S.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis junior Kaitlyn Carnicella and sophomore Bella Bergqvist Larsson capped play at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic with titles in Flight 1 and Flight 2 singles, respectively.
No. 24 Carnicella faced her first ranked opponent of the season in the Flight 1 final and sprinted to a 6-3 first-set win over No. 76 Kate Dmitrichenko of Texas Tech. The two battled through a tight second set with Carnicella scoring a late break to clinch the 7-5 victory.
In Flight 2, Bergqvist Larsson claimed the first set from Lillie Murphy of host Furman 6-4. Like her doubles partner Carnicella, the Gamecock sophomore had a tough second set on her hands. Once the set went to a tiebreak, Bergqvist Larsson dominated to win 7-6 (3).
Sophomore transfer Taylor Goetz was also in her flight final and stormed to a 6-1 first-set win before Georgia Tech’s Seri Nayuki edged her in a second-set tiebreak 7-6 (4) and then sealed the Flight 4 title 6-4 in the third.
Several Gamecocks will be back in action next weekend at the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, N.C.
