Gamecocks Wrap up Day Three of ITA All-American Championships
CARY, N.C. – South Carolina completed the final day of the qualifying rounds at the ITA All-American Championships.
On Monday, Lauren Friedman and Helena Buchwald secured a hard-fought victory over Maryland’s ninth-seeded pair, Emma Ghirardato and Ema Kovacevic, in three sets. The Gamecocks opened with a 6-3 win in the first, narrowly dropped the second in a 9-7 tiebreak, and responded with a decisive 10-4 super tiebreak in the third to advance.
Kaitlyn Carnicella and Daniela Piani also battled to a super tiebreak, dropping their first set 6-4 to a pair from Vanderbilt before storming back in a dominant 6-1 win. Ultimately the Gamecocks lost the match after falling 10-5.
The following day, Friedman and Buchwald held their own against the third seeded duo Giorgia Roselli and Xin Tong Wang from Wichita State, forcing a tiebreaker where they narrowly fell 10-8. The Gamecocks were unable to carry the momentum into the second set and ultimately fell 6-2 to end their qualifying run.
The main draw rounds begin tomorrow with No. 24 Kaitlyn Carnicella who is slated to compete in singles.
