Women's Tennis Sweeps Season Opener Doubleheader

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s tennis team opened the dual match season with wins over Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina. The Gamecocks swept the Buccaneers 4-0 after winning the doubles point and taking singles victories on courts 4, 5 and 6. South Carolina also similarly swept Coastal Carolina with singles wins on courts 2,5 and 6. 

CHARLESTON SOUTHERN

The duo of Jane Dunyon and Jana Stojanova got things started early for the Gamecocks on court three, winning four straight sets to take their match 6-2.  Lauren Friedman and Helena Buchwald clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win from the second position to give South Carolina a 1-0 lead.

The Gamecocks took first-set wins on five courts, but it was the bottom of the order that led the team to its first win of the season, with Dunyon dominating 6-1, 6-0 for her first career dual match win on court 4. Stojanova defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-1 from the fifth position to put South Carolina within one point of the win. Friedman clinched the Gamecock victory from court six, winning her match 6-2, 6-2.

COASTAL CAROLINA

The Gamecocks started the match at a 2-0 deficit on each doubles court. Coastal Carolina took the advantage on court three when Dunyon and Stojanova fell 6-3. Friedman and Buchwald came back to take their match 6-4 and force a deciding match at the first position. Kaitlyn Carnicella and Taylor Goetz stormed back from down 4-1 to clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 win. 

South Carolina won the first set across each of the courts in singles play. Stojanova won her second singles match of the day, 6-0, 6-1 on court 6 to put the Gamecocks up 2-0. Dunyon took her match as well, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-2. Goetz climbed back from a 4-1 deficit to win her first set 7-5. Buchwald claimed the South Carolina victory on court 2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win, completing the Gamecocks’ opening day sweep.
