Women’s Tennis Heads to Durham for ITA Kickoff Weekend
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s tennis team returns to action as it heads to Durham, N.C., to compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday. The Gamecocks will open the weekend by taking on Miami (Fla.) at 1 p.m.
The winner of the match will advance to take on host Duke on Saturday at 11 a.m.
SEASON OPENER SWEEP
- The Gamecocks swept the Buccaneers 4-0 after winning the doubles point and taking singles victories on courts 4, 5 and 6. South Carolina also similarly swept Coastal Carolina with singles wins on courts 2,5 and 6.
Charleston Southern
- The duo of Jane Dunyon and Jana Stojanova got things started early for the Gamecocks on court three, winning four straight sets to take their match 6-2.
- Lauren Friedman and Helena Buchwald clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win from the second position to give South Carolina a 1-0 lead.
- The Gamecocks took first-set wins on five courts, but it was the bottom of the order that led the team to its first win of the season, with Dunyon dominating 6-1, 6-0 for her first career dual match win on court 4.
- Stojanova defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-1 from the fifth position to put South Carolina within one point of the win. Friedman clinched the Gamecock victory from court six, winning her match 6-2, 6-2.
Coastal Carolina
- The Gamecocks started the match at a 2-0 deficit on each doubles court. Coastal Carolina took the advantage on court three when Dunyon and Stojanova fell 6-3.
- Friedman and Buchwald came back to take their match 6-4 and force a deciding match at the first position.
- Kaitlyn Carnicella and Taylor Goetz stormed back from down 4-1 to clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 win.
- South Carolina won the first set across each of the courts in singles play. Stojanova won her second singles match of the day, 6-0, 6-1 on court 6 to put the Gamecocks up 2-0.
- Dunyon took her match as well, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-2. Goetz climbed back from a 4-1 deficit to win her first set 7-5.
- Buchwald claimed the South Carolina victory on court 2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win, completing the Gamecocks’ opening day sweep.
Scouting the Hurricanes
- The Hurricanes opened their spring slate on Wednesday against Florida Gulf Coast, claiming a 7-0 victory.
- Miami ended the 2024-25 season 10-13 (4-8 ACC). The Hurricanes advanced to the third round of the ACC Championship before then facing all to ranked No. 26 Stanford.
- During the fall, Miami secured five wins at the ITA All-American Championships, highlighted by sophomore Aely Arai, who won three straight matches in the prequalifying draw to earn herself a spot in the qualifying draw.
Scouting the Blue Devils
- Duke opened their 2026 spring campaign with two wins over Iowa (4-1) and North Carolina Central (4-0) last weekend.
- Last season, Duke finished 24–4 (12–0 ACC) and made a run in the NCAA Championship before falling to eventual national champion Georgia in the quarterfinals
- The Blue Devils concluded the fall season at the NCAA Singles & Doubles Championship, where they saw Irina Balus advance to the round of 16 and the doubles pair of Liv Hovde and Shavit Kimchi also moved on to the round of 16.
Series History
- Against the Hurricanes, the series stands at 2-3 with Miami owning a one-match edge. The two teams haven’t faced off since 1988.
- Duke and South Carolina have faced each other a total of 27 times, with the Blue Devils leading the series, 19-8. The last match-up between the two programs was last season, where Duke claimed a 1-5 win.
