Gamecocks Welcome No. 21 Tigers on Tuesday Night

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s tennis team remains home to host in-state rival, No. 21 Clemson, on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The match will be played outdoors at the Carolina Tennis Center.

Fans can park in the grass lot between the Athletics Village parking garage and the Carolina Tennis Center, as well as metered street spots (subject to fees required through the ParkMobile app). Admission into the match is free. Concessions will be available for purchase as well.

ITA RANKINGS

  • Four Gamecocks found themselves in the first ITA rankings of the year.

LAST TIME OUT

The Gamecocks claimed a 4-1 victory over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday.

The No. 37 duo of Lauren Friedman and Helena Buchwald set the tone with a dominant 6–2 win on court one. From the first position, Kaitlyn Carnicella and Jane Dunyon earned a hard-fought 7–5 victory against Georgia Tech, their first match playing together as a pair. With victories on courts one and three, the Gamecocks claimed the doubles point, taking an early 1-0 lead.

In the singles competition, No. 80 Carnicella extended South Carolina’s lead with a 6-1, 6-1 upset victory over No. 47 Cruz on court one. Jane Dunyon followed on court five, earning a straight-sets win to put the Gamecocks one point away from the win. Taylor Goetz delivered a resilient three-set win on court four. After dropping the opening set, Goetz took control in the second, evening the match with a commanding 6-2 performance. She carried that momentum into the deciding set, breaking serve and closing out the match, 6-3, to clinch the overall victory for South Carolina.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS

Clemson is ranked 21st in the most recent ITA Women’s Team poll alongside Ria Bhakta, who is No. 124 in singles. Jade Groen/Rinon Okuwaki (23rd), Gaia Parravicini/Amelie Smejkalova (48th) and Romana Cisovska/Candela Yecora (80th) are all featured in the doubles rankings. The Tigers are 6-1 overall and have won their last two matches. Their lone loss was to #16 Tennessee in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Most notably, Clemson defeated #13 Pepperdine, 4-3, in the first match of the ITA Kickoff. Last season, the Tigers finished 14-12 overall and 4-8 in the ACC.

SERIES HISTORY

The Gamecocks lead the overall series 32-29. Both teams have traded wins the past four years, but the Tigers claimed last season’s meeting in Spartanburg. South Carolina is 18-10 against Clemson when playing at home.
