Pair of Hurdlers Tie Program Record in Day Two at SEC Indoor Championship
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Feb. 27, 2026) – South Carolina Track & Field competed in a total of 10 preliminary events on the track in day two of the SEC Indoor Championship in College Station, Texas.
Akala Garrett and Joslyn Hamilton capped off the preliminary day matching each other for the program indoor 60-meter hurdle record. Garrett, running in heat two, turned in a time of 8.06 to set the new South Carolina record. Not to be outdone, Hamilton running in the fourth and final heat also crossed the finish line in 8.06 to tie the Texas transfer. The pair of record holders each qualified on time for the 60mH finale on Saturday.
Salma Elbadra kicked things off for the women in the mile prelims in the first track event of the day, dominating the field after running 4:35.07 for the top overall time. Teammates Eline Mast (4:41.20) and Abigail White (4:42.88) turned in the fifth and sixth fastest times in program history, narrowly missing out on the finals. Next on the track was the 60-meter sprint with Alexis Brown coming out as the lone qualifier for the Gamecocks, running 7.24. JaMeesia Ford (7.24) and Cynteria James (7.29) each clocked new personal best times as Ford climbed to eighth all time in program history and James jumped into a tie for 10th.
The final qualifier for the women on Friday was Zaya Akins out of the 400m preliminary round, securing the eighth and final spot after running 52.41.
The men’s team accumulated three more finalists on the day, including a pair from the 400m sprints. Josiah Wrice turned in a time of 45.71 for the seventh slot in tomorrow’s finale, while Jasauna Dennis recorded a personal best mark of 45.83 for the eighth and final qualifying spot. In addition, Dennis moved into fourth all-time in Gamecock history following his sub-46 second race.
Jaouad Khchina was the final qualifier on Friday for the men, doing so in the mile after turning in a time of 4:01.84. The Morocco native won his heat and posted the second fastest overall time during the preliminary race.
The Gamecocks will conclude the 2026 SEC Indoor Championship tomorrow with day three in College Station. The first event for South Carolina will be the men’s pole vault as Khaliq Muhammad looks to replicate his sister Jathiyah Muhammad’s success at 4:30 p.m. (ET). The final event will be the men’s 4x400m relay at 8:05 p.m. (ET).
