Baseball Falls to Clemson, 4-1, at Segra Park

COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team fell, 4-1, to No. 15 Clemson Saturday afternoon (Feb. 28) at Segra Park, home of the Columbia Fireflies.

Carolina struck first in the third as Will Craddock doubled and scored on an Ethan Lizama single to right. That was the only run for the Gamecocks as Clemson starting pitcher Michael Sharman went the distance, allowing four hits and a run with four strikeouts on only 78 pitches.

Clemson took the lead for good in the bottom of the third on Nate Savoie’s three-run home run. Clemson added a run in the fourth on a Jarren Purify sacrifice fly.

Brandon Stone came in relief and pitched 4.2 shutout innings, allowing three hits with two strikeouts. The loss went to Amp Phillips, who allowed four runs on six hits with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

Craddock and Lizama had two hits apiece with Lizama driving in a run.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • The game lasted 2:02, the shortest of the season for Carolina.
  • Craddock had his third double of the season and upped his average to .440 on the year.
  • Lizama is hitting .429 (6-for-14) in Carolina’s last five games.
  • Attendance at Segra Park was 8,480.
