Gunther Named SEC Pitcher of the Week

BIRMINGHAM – University of South Carolina junior baseball pitcher Josh Gunther has been named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Pitcher of the Week, it was announced this afternoon (March 2). Gunther picked up the honor for his performance in Carolina’s win over rival Clemson.

Gunther, making his first career start on the mound, pitched a gem, going seven innings and allowing just three hits with no runs, one walk and a career-best 10 strikeouts in the 7-0 win over No. 15 Clemson on Friday night. Gunther, who threw 90 pitches on the day, ended five of his seven innings with a strikeout and retired the final six batters of his night. Clemson was hitting .332 as a team before Friday night, which was Carolina’s second shutout of the season and second in the last four games. Gunther is a perfect 2-0 on the year with a 4.20 ERA.

Gunther becomes the second Gamecock to earn conference player of the week honors this season. Will Craddock was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Feb. 23.

In other specialty awards, Florida’s Brendan Lawson and Texas’ Temo Becerra shared Player of the Week honors. Auburn’s Mason McCraine was named the Freshman of the Week.

Carolina plays five home games this week, starting on Tuesday night (March 3) against USC Upstate. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. and the game will be streamed on SEC Network Plus.
