BOCA RATON, Fla. – South Carolina (8-5) dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Providence (2-7) in the squad’s first game on Sunday in the fourth-annual Florida Atlantic Strike Out Cancer Tournament.
Junior Laura Mendes had two of the Gamecocks’ three RBI with a double, moving into the team lead for the season. Michelle Huber led Providence with three hits and two RBI.
Providence started its comeback bid in the fifth, with Jenna Garcia scoring the first run on the second illegal pitch against Gamecock sophomore reliever Kelsey Goodwin. Teresa Bertels followed with a single to plate Huber. The Friars took the lead in the sixth with two more runs when Huber brought home Katelyn Revens and Alaina Thomas with a single to center that just missed hitting Goodwin.
South Carolina got two runs in the first on a two-RBI double by Mendes. That scored junior April Borchardt and senior Adele Voigt, as the Gamecocks got a leadoff walk from Borchardt and a single by Voigt. Borchardt added the Gamecocks’ third run in the second as she tripled home sophomore Lauren Lackey, who led off the frame with a walk.
Goodwin (0-3) got the loss, giving up two unearned runs on two hits while striking out a career-high six batters in three innings. Corinne Clauss (1-2) earned the win, fanning three while allowing just one hit in 5.2 innings of relief.
